Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is very popular in Hong Kong. In spite of the sophisticated level of medical service available, a large sector of the population, irrespective of their social background are still seeking the help of herbalists, especially when they feel disappointed with western doctors in cases of chronic disease or terminal situation, or in a wide range of subclinical symptoms in which TCM can bring relief.
Riding on the wave of the change in sovereignity, TCM commands more respect than ever before. There is a strong demand from the community, and a large dose of willingness from the academics to launch formal university education in TCM.
Such advanced level of education is always available in China mainland. But Hong Kong calls for a new generation of TCM practitioners who are knowledgeable in biomedical sciences, well-versed in TCM and at the same time adequately educated with humanities. They would practise as family doctors and liaise with western doctors in order to provide cost-effective medical care to a population who have access to both medical systems.
