Dermatoglyphic is the term coined to describe the epidermal ridge configurations and skin surfaces of the palms and soles. They develop in the human foetus during the 6th to 20th week, after which they are impervious to environmental factors and they are individually unique. Thus, they are ascribed a genetic component and become used to supplement the diagnosis of various genetic (chromosomal) syndromes detectable at birth and for criminal and forensic identification. There are also gender, ethnic and evolutionary differences. Lately, dematoglyphic studies try to detect groups at high risk for diseases of late onset, like neurological diseases (Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis), various cancers, cardiovascular problems and mental illness. The aim of the presentation is to acknowledge the use of dermatoglyphic analysis as a supplementary tool in medical diagnosis, especially in mental illness, where it might help in problems of differential diagnosis.
