A case of severe intermittent claudication successfully treated with acupuncture and Japanese kanpo medicine

Objective

Acupuncture and Japanese Kanpo medicine clearly improved arterial blood flow and removed almost all symptoms, in a case of intermittent claudication, awaiting surgical intervention.

Materials and method

A sixty nine year old woman suffering from severe intermittent claudication for three years was given acupuncture treatment and Kanpo medicine. Treatment lasted 3 months with 8 acupuncture sessions and daily doses of Kanpo medicine.

Results

The patient’s mobility increased from 100 meters to 5 kilometers with no pain. Blood flow perfusion testing of the lowser limb showed clear improvement.

Conclusion

Acupuncture and Kanpo medicine was a successful treatment option in this case, and the patient was able to avoid surgical intervention.
