Objective

Three cases of thyroid conditions successfully treated with acupuncture and Kanpo medicine suggest that this treatment method could be a reliable option even in severe and long-standing cases.

Materials and methods

Two cases of relapsing thyroiditis with hyperthyroidism and one case of ITP on the bases of hypothyroidism. Treatment consisted of acupuncture and Kanpo medicine, in the latter case initially overlapping conventional treatment.

Results

One case demonstrates clear improvement so that urgent radioactive treatment was avoided. One case of relapsing thyroiditis presented here in 1997 is still stable two years later. The third case demonstrated a clear ability to raise and maintain the blood platelet count, so splenectomy was avoided.

Conclusion

The case stories suggest acupuncture and Kanpo medicine could replace more drastic conventional measures in the treatment of thyroid disease.
