Thirteen years of combined medicine in a Copenhagen general practice

Bang-Nielsen NJ
General Practitioner, Toftegårds Alle 42, 2500 Valby, Copenhagen, Denmark

Objective

An audit of the integration of acupuncture in the working routine of a general practice, to present an overview of areas of application, the therapeutic encounter, and the patient’s satisfaction.

Materials and method

An account of the use of acupuncture during the last thirteen years, based on patients files from general practice.

Results

A description of the areas where acupuncture can relatively easily be integrated in the busy daily therapeutic routines in general practice, along with the diagnostic considerations that led to the use of acupuncture, and a description of the effect experienced by the patients.

Conclusion

Acupuncture has a wide range of applications, also as part of the daily routine in general practice. It is a valuable additional tool in a general practice, and in combination with conventional general medicine it offers a safe non-drug extension of the treatment options for many common conditions.
