Objective

Cardiovascular diseases and osteoarthritis (OA) are very common conditions among elderly people; they represent, respectively, the common cause of disability and the major determinant of mortality. The aim of our study is investigate if mud pack treatment (MPT) is able, or not, to influence serum levels of cholesterol, triglicerides, high density lipoproteins (HDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL) in aged osteoarthrosic patients.

Materials and methods

We enrolled 15 osteoarthrosic subjects undergoing MPT and collected blood samples before and after the therapy, to assay serum levels of triglicerides and cholesterol, HDL and LDL.

Results

The sudy shows no significant variation in the parameters assayed between basal and final time.

 basalfinalsign
Cholesterol (ml/dec)288.2 ± 41.2285.4 ± 40.9p > 0.5
Tryglicerides (ml/dec)187.2 ± 61.8195.9 ± 96.1p > 0.5
HDL (ml.dec) 49.8 ± 18.6 52.3 ± 19.5p > 0.5
LDL (ml/dec)196.6 ± 41.1193.7 ± 38.3p > 0.5

Conclusions

MPT, a very popular OA treatment, does not provoke increases in lipid serum levels. It can be confirmed that need a careful clinical screening of patients before the beginning of MPT, above all in cardiovascular diseases, but the results do not justify the hypothesis that the thermal treatment, influencing lipid serum, leads to increased risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and their complications.
