Autogenic Training: its effects on nursing students

Objective

To investigate the value of Autogenic Training in the reduction of stress in nursing students.

Materials and methods

A randomised controlled trial was set up at a University College. Ninety-three male and female nursing students volunteered to participate as subjects. From these three parallel groups were formed. The first group received a full course of Autogenic Training, the second, sessions of Laughter Therapy on a weekly basis, while the third received no treatment and functioned as a control group. The Outcome Measures selected for this trial were Spielberger’s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Maslach Burnout Inventory. In all instances, blood pressure and pulse of subjects were recorded and all subjects were encouraged to keep a diary. The subjects were followed up at intervals of three, six nine and twelve months.

Results

Analysis of the first nine months will be presented at the meeting.
