European Union legislation for food supplements

On 13 March 2002, the European Parliament voted in favour of legislative text proposed in May 2000 for regulations for food supplements. This clears the way for the final adoption of new European Union-wide rules that will harmonise the substantially diverging national rules on the sale of food supplements. The rules focus on safety and transparency of food supplements, particularly vitamins and minerals. Herbal remedy and vitamin manufacturers will have to submit the results of tests to a European scientific committee if they wish their products to be deemed safe and able to stay on the market. It is being projected that health shops in European Union countries will be forced out of business, and a number of dietary supplements will be banned.
