Chinese diet products warning in Japan

The Japanese Health Ministry reported that more than 15 different Chinese diet products, many labelled as being made from herbs or tea, were associated with adverse effects in at least 317 people.1 The reported adverse effects include liver problems, thyroid problems, and fatalities.

On August 13, the US Food and Drug Administration also alerted the public about the Chinese weight-loss products Chaso (Jianfei) Diet Capsules and Chaso Genpi.2 The FDA believes that the deaths in Japan may have resulted from the presence of such active drug ingredients as fenfluramine in the capsules.
