Lead contamination widespread in certain supplements in the USA

A study by ConsumerLab conducted over the past 9 months has found that approximately 5–10% of certain mineral supplements available in the USA are contaminated with lead. To estimate the current extent of the problem, ConsumerLab analysed 56 supplements containing iron, magnesium or potassium. In its review of potassium supplements, it found lead contamination in one of the 18 potassium products tested. If taken to treat potassium deficiency, consumption of this product would have resulted in a daily dose of 10–20 mg lead. One of 19 iron supplements and two of 19 magnesium supplements were also contaminated with lead. None of the other products tested contained more than 0.1 mg lead per tablet. Other irregularities, such as too much or too little mineral, were noted with some of the supplements.
